One of the worst enemies of the animator is a non-responsive viewport that cannot playback the animation at an interactive framerate. It kills the flow of animating and makes it difficult to asses the timing and fluidity of the motion.
A “proxy” character rig is a simplified version of a character specifically designed for high viewport performance. That can mean a lower polycount, lower resolution textures and simpler materials, less active modifiers, etc.
Another industry-standard proxy-technique is splitting the character mesh in chunks and parenting each one directly to a bone in the rig. This is proven to increase playback speed dramatically.
However, creating a proxy character requires specialized knowledge and takes a significant amount of time.
